What is a BMW FSC code?
FSC stands for Freischaltcode — German for "activation code". It is a cryptographic certificate BMW issues for one specific vehicle, identified by its 17-character VIN. Your head unit checks the FSC's digital signature before enabling a feature: if the VIN inside the code doesn't match the car, or the signature isn't genuine, the code is rejected.
The most common use is navigation map updates: when you install new map data via USB, the head unit asks for the FSC code before it will use the new maps. FSC codes also activate other features (for example Apple CarPlay on cars that had the preparation option from factory).
The two FSC formats
- • 20-character typed code — used by CIC, NBT and EVO ID4 head units. You type it into the iDrive screen during the map update.
- • Signed FSC file — used by EVO ID5/ID6, EntryNav2 (WAY) and MGU (LIVE) units. A file-based certificate imported via USB or coding software; these cannot be self-generated.
Both formats are bound to your VIN and to a specific product (for example the EVO map series for your region). A map FSC is not tied to a yearly release — one FSC activates current and future versions of the same map series.
When do you need an FSC code?
- ✓ Updating navigation maps via USB on CIC, NBT, NBT EVO or EntryNav head units
- ✓ A used or replacement head unit was installed and needs the factory certificates for your VIN
- ✓ Certificates were deleted during coding, flashing or a failed update
- ✓ A head unit that keeps rejecting codes after too many wrong attempts
Newer MGU vehicles (iDrive 7, roughly 2019+) download maps over the air with an active ConnectedDrive subscription — but still need their FSC set after hardware replacement or when the subscription lapses.
About free FSC generators
Free generator tools circulate on forums and work — sometimes — for CIC, NBT and EVO ID4 only. On EVO ID5/ID6, EntryNav2 and MGU they cannot produce valid signatures at all.
The hidden cost is failure mode: repeated wrong codes can leave the head unit rejecting every code, including correct ones, until the factory certificates are restored. Forum threads are full of owners who tried dozens of generated codes and ended up with no navigation at all. Our FSC code not working guide covers recovery.
How to get the right code for your VIN

Frequently asked questions
What does FSC stand for?
FSC means Freischaltcode — German for activation code. It is a cryptographic certificate issued by BMW that unlocks a software feature (like navigation maps) for one specific vehicle VIN.
Can one FSC code be used on multiple cars?
No. Every FSC code is bound to a single 17-character VIN. A code generated for another vehicle will always be rejected by your head unit.
Why does my head unit reject the code from a free generator?
Free generators only work for older CIC, NBT and EVO ID4 units, and often produce codes that fail signature checks. EVO ID5/ID6 and MGU units require signed FSC files from the BMW database.
How long does delivery take?
Your FSC repair pack is generated automatically about one minute after payment and is available in your VinFSC profile and by email.
