BMW map update — the complete 2026 guide
How to update BMW navigation maps yourself: identify your head unit, download the right map version, install via USB, and activate with an FSC code.

Which head unit and map series do you have?
BMW navigation is sold under different map series names depending on the head unit. You must download the map series that matches your hardware — a NEXT map will not install on an EVO unit.
| Head unit | Map series | Approx. years | Activation |
|---|---|---|---|
| CIC (iDrive Professional) | Premium | 2008–2013 | Typed code |
| CIC Business / Radio | Motion / Move | 2010–2016 | Typed code |
| NBT | Next | 2012–2017 | Typed code |
| NBT EVO (ID4–ID6) | EVO | 2015–2020 | Code or FSC file |
| EntryNav / EntryNav2 | Route / Way | 2016–2023 | FSC file |
| MGU (iDrive 7) | LIVE | 2019+ | OTA or FSC file |

How to update your maps — step by step
- Identify your head unit and map series (decode your VIN or check the navigation version in iDrive settings).
- Download the current map data for your series and region — BMW releases new versions two to three times per year.
- Prepare a USB stick — 32 GB or larger, FAT32 (exFAT works on newer EVO units) — and copy the map data to its root.
- Plug the stick into the car's USB port with the ignition on. The head unit detects the update and starts installation (this can take 30–60 minutes for a full map).
- Enter the FSC activation code when asked — or import the FSC file — and let the update finish. Done.
The FSC activation step
The map data itself is the same for every car — what makes the update work on your vehicle is the FSC code. It is generated for your VIN and checked by the head unit before the new maps are unlocked.
One map FSC covers the whole series: a single EVO FSC for your VIN activates the current EVO release and future EVO releases for your region. You only need a new FSC if you change region or map series.
If your unit rejects a code, see FSC code not working — the cause is usually a generator code, a VIN typo, or deleted certificates.
Dealer vs DIY — what it costs
A dealership map update typically costs €150–400 including labor, and in Japan the bring-in price exceeds ¥26,000. The DIY route — download the data, buy a VIN-matched FSC online — costs a fraction of that and takes under an hour.
Free generator codes are the one option we recommend against: they only cover older units and can leave the head unit rejecting all codes. A genuine VIN-bound FSC works on the first attempt and is covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
How often does BMW release new maps?
BMW releases updated map data two to three times per year for each map series (for example EVO, NEXT or ROUTE), depending on region.
Do I need an FSC code for every map update?
Yes for USB updates on CIC, NBT, NBT EVO and EntryNav units — the head unit asks for the activation code during installation. Newer MGU vehicles with an active ConnectedDrive subscription update over the air instead.
How much does a dealer map update cost?
Dealerships typically charge €150–400 including labor. A DIY update with an online FSC code costs a fraction of that.
What USB stick do I need?
A 32 GB or larger USB drive formatted to FAT32 (or exFAT for newer EVO units) works for most map packages.
