FSC code not working — causes and fixes

Your BMW keeps rejecting the activation code? The most common causes — wrong VIN, generator codes, ID5/ID6 signature checks, deleted certificates — and how to fix each one.

Why your BMW rejects the code

Four causes account for almost every "FSC code not accepted" case:

  1. The code wasn't made for your VIN. FSC codes are VIN-bound — a code from a forum, a friend, or generated for a different car will always fail. Double-check for typos too: 0 vs O, 1 vs I.
  2. It's a generator code your unit can't accept. Free generators only cover CIC, NBT and EVO ID4. On EVO ID5/ID6, EntryNav2 and MGU, no generated code can pass the signature check.
  3. Wrong map series. A Next code won't activate EVO maps; a Premium code won't activate Motion. The map data and the FSC must match your head unit.
  4. Damaged certificates. After coding, flashing, a failed update, or too many wrong attempts, the unit may reject even a genuine code until its certificates are restored.

The generator trap

The most common story we hear: an owner downloads a free FSC generator, produces a code, and the car rejects it. They try again — different settings, different maps, dozens of attempts. Somewhere in that loop the head unit stops accepting everything, and now even a correct code fails. BMW forums have threads with hundreds of replies from owners stuck exactly here, some left with no working navigation at all.

If this is you: stop trying more codes. Each failed attempt makes recovery harder, not easier.

How to fix each case

  • Wrong or generator code: get a genuine VIN-matched FSC. Decode your VIN and order the pack for your exact head unit.
  • Unit rejects everything: restore the factory certificate set with an FSC repair kit, then activate with a valid code.
  • Replaced/retrofitted head unit: the unit holds the donor car's certificates — restore your VIN's factory FSC set first.
  • Unsure which head unit you have: our map update guide explains the generations, or decode your VIN.

Every pack is pulled from the BMW database for your VIN and covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee — if it doesn't solve the problem, you don't pay.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my BMW say the FSC code is wrong?

Most often the code was not generated for your exact VIN, it came from a free generator your head unit does not accept, or the stored certificates were damaged so even valid codes fail.

I tried many generated codes and now nothing works — what happened?

Repeated wrong attempts can leave the head unit in a state where it rejects all codes. Restoring the factory FSC certificate set for your VIN resets this.

Do generator codes work on EVO ID5 or ID6?

No. Free generators only cover CIC, NBT and EVO ID4. ID5, ID6 and MGU units verify signatures and require genuine BMW-issued FSC files.

Will a repair kit fix a head unit replaced from another car?

Yes — that is the classic repair-kit case. After a used head unit is installed, the factory FSC set for the vehicle VIN must be restored before map activation works.
