Which BMWs have NBT navigation?
NBT (Next Big Thing) is the Professional navigation fitted roughly between 2012 and 2017: F30/F31 3-series, F10/F11 5-series, F25 X3, F15 X5, F06/F12/F13 6-series and early F48 X1. It runs the Next map series.
These cars are now a decade old and changing hands — a map update is usually the first thing a new owner wants, since BMW stopped issuing free updates for NBT years ago.
NBT vs NBT EVO — don't mix them up
NBT and NBT EVO look similar but use different map data (Next vs EVO) and different FSC types. A Next code will not activate an EVO map and vice versa.
Rule of thumb: 2012–2015 is almost always NBT; late-2015 onwards can be either depending on series. If your car is from the transition years, decode your VIN — it removes the guesswork. For EVO, see the NBT EVO FSC guide.
Activating Next maps
NBT uses a 20-character code typed directly into the iDrive screen during the USB update — no computer, cables or coding software needed. One NBT FSC activates every current and future Next release for your region.
Step-by-step instructions in the map update guide.
Replaced head unit or rejected codes?
NBT units are popular used-market swaps, and a swapped unit holds the donor car's certificates — your VIN's code will be rejected until the factory FSC set is restored. The FSC repair kit fixes this in one step.
Frequently asked questions
Which BMWs have NBT navigation?
NBT (sold as Next map series) was fitted roughly 2012–2017 in models like F30 3-series, F10 5-series, F25 X3 and F15 X5 with the Professional navigation system.
Is NBT the same as NBT EVO?
No. NBT is the older unit (Next maps), NBT EVO is its successor (EVO maps, ID4–ID6 software). Map data and FSC types are not interchangeable.
Does an NBT FSC work for future map versions?
Yes — like EVO, the NBT map FSC is bound to your VIN and the Next series, so it activates every current and future Next release for your region.
Do I need a computer to enter the code?
No. On NBT the 20-character code is typed directly into the iDrive screen during the map update.
